corbin's trip to detroit.

We wondered: How long is the bridge to Canada in Detroit?

1.4 miles or 7500 feet

When we were looking for information on the bridge to Canada, we found a video series about how they built the bridge from 1927-1929. We noticed several things...

  • They knocked down houses to build the bridge. They used the parts of houses to build other things.

  • They used foot bridges on the top of the bridge that were held on by ropes.

  • They put two metal things in the ground to hold the bridge up.

  • They pulled the wires up from the bottom of the river to put them over the top.

  • They used giant girders that look like rails to build the bridge.

  •

We spent a lot of time looking at the map of Detroit. We found the bridge to Canada...and we found the tunnel to Canada too.

Then we were curious about the blue space. We knew it was water, but what kind of water was it? Ocean water? So we zoomed out and learned that it was a lake...a really big lake.

We were also curious about the black line through the middle of the picture. As we zoomed out, we figured out that the black line separates the United States from Canada.

Flat Stanley goes to Sun City Arizona

FLATSTANLEY
We are Brody's paternal grandparents.  Our names are Papa and Nene Tesar.  We had the pleasure of taking Stanley to Sun City Arizona for a week.  It was his first time flying on an airplane which was very exciting for him.  We flew from Peoria Illinois to Sun City Arizona which is about 1,600 miles away.  It took 2 ½ hours to get there by plane.  If you drove there it would take 2 ½ to 3 days of boring driving time.

There are about 40,000 people who live in Sun City.  It is a community in which the full time residents must be at least 55 year old in order to live there.

In surrounding areas Spring Training is held for many major league baseball teams .  Among them are the Chicago Cubs and the San Diego Padres.  You have to go to Florida in the spring if you want to watch the Cardinals.

There are also a lot of golf courses in the area.  While Stanley was there he played golf and gave a friend of Papa’s a golf lesson or two…….. Stanley shot a 79 for 18 holes which is 7 shots over “par”…. Way to go Stanley!!!!

He also was lucky enough to go to Brody’s cousin’s (Knox Tesar’s) 1st birthday party.  He met a lot of nice kids there.  He also got to hug a pomegranate that was hanging on a tree in the back yard. Brody’s great-aunt Beckie held him up real high so he could reach it!  There are lots of pomegranates in Arizona but not in Missouri.

Stanley had lots of fun but was glad to come back home.

We had a few questions to ask Brody's grandpa, so we sent him an email.

Dear Mr. Tesar,

Thank you for taking Flat Stanley to Sun City. We had a couple of questions about your email. We were wondering…

Why are only 55+ year olds able to live in Sun City?

Is the time in Sun City, Arizona different from the time in Missouri?

From,

Miss Winter’s First Grade Friends
Two great questions..  First, I guess too many older folks forgot how much fun it is to be around younger people.  I hope I never get there.  Maybe the older folks like to sleep a lot and the younger kids keep them awake!!  Second, Sun City is on mountain time, I think, but they never change their clocks I'm the fall and in the spring.  So at this time of year, if it is 6:00 in Missouri, it is 5:00 in Sun City.
I hope this helps and we REALLY enjoyed Flat Stanley's cpmpany
