Matthew snail mailed flat Stanley to Tulsa Oklahoma to visit his great Aunt Missy (Mimi). While he was there he went to the Oklahoma aquarium( met a new friend there- no relation to Matthew), praying hands(held by a new friend-no relation to Matthew), visited and played with cousin Ava and went to the river walk with the city of Tulsa in the back ground.
He had a great time he decided to stay with Ava.

What is important & interesting about Tulsa?  Tulsa is the 45th largest city in the US.  It was once known as the "Oil Capital of the World".  Tulsa is located in what is called "Green Country", the only part of the state of Oklahoma that is densely vegetated.  The Dust Bowl of the 1920s was also started in the Tulsa area.
What does vegetated mean? Does it have something to do with veggies or vegetarians?
What was the Dust Bowl?

Lucy's Flat Stanley Goes to Franklin, Tennessee

Lucy's Flat Stanley has traveled all the way to Franklin, TN to visit her cousins, Walker, Will and Mary Claire.  We have had such fun with him! He's been a very busy little guy!

He traveled about 5 and a half hours to get here. Franklin is 355 miles from St. John. We have a population of 62,000 + residents and are located about 15 miles south of Nashville.  Franklin was founded in 1799 and named after Benjamin Franklin.

Was he a president a long time ago?

We were voted the one of the best small towns in America and #1 in Tennessee.  One of the bloodiest wars in the Civil War took place here, bringing thousands of historic tourists each year to visit the site of the Battle of Franklin, Carnton Plantation, the Carter House and many other historic locations throughout the City.

Was the Civil War when George Washington was alive?
George Washington was the first president of the United States.
Did the army go to the Civil War?
Who won the Civil War?
What was the year of the Civil War?
Who fought in the Civil War?
What weapons did they use in the Civil War?
Did the Liberty Bell ring during the Civil War?
Did they use guns in the Civil War?
Did they use spears in the Civil War?

Downtown Franklin is well known for its annual festivals and parades including: The Main Street Festival in Spring; Fourth of July in Summer: PumpkinFest in October: The Veterans Day Parade in November; and Dickens of a Christmas in December. Thousands of tourists visit Franklin each year to attend these festivals and many more throughout the year.
That is a lot!
Visitors enjoy the beautiful 15 block historic district that offers true southern hospitality. The uniquely elegant shops downtown offer a variety of restaurants, clothing, gifts and galleries.

Thank you for sharing Flat Stanley with us and giving us the opportunity to share with the class our wonderful small town.  Please give our sweet Lucy a big hug from the Pike Family!!

Caleb's Flat Stanley Visits Philadelphia

How many people live in your community?
The Philadelphia area consists of over 4 million people
"It is a huge community. St. Louis has fewer people than Philadelphia."

Is it in the country or the city?
It is in the city, but we spent most of our time in the suburbs of the city (Bensalem, PA)

How far away from St. Louis is your community?
886 miles!

What state is your community in?
Pennsylvania

What country is your community in?
The United States

What is important about your community?
Philadelphia is on two major rivers (Delaware and Schuylkill) that make it a large shipping center on the East coast of the United States.  The Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia and the Liberty Bell (picture) lives here! There was a lot of history made in this city, going back to the early days of our country all the way until now.

We learned that the bell is 259 years old. They pulled it with a rope. It was a heavy bell. The building was 50 feet tall that it was in. It used to be in Independence Hall but they replaced it with a different bell. When they rang it, they might have plugged their ears. The bell doesn't ring any more. They put it in a glass case. It has a big crack in it.

What is interesting about your community?
There is a lot of great food in Philadelphia.  While here, we got to try their AMAZING pretzels and Cheesesteaks.  From what the people I visited tell me, "Jim's Steaks" (picture) make the best in the world.

Also, they tape Sesame Street very close to Philadelphia, so we went to visit Sesame Place, which is an Amusement Park and Film Studio (pictures attached).
Sports teams up here are REALLY taken seriously.  The Phillies (Baseball), Eagles (Football), Sixers (Basketball) and Flyers (Hockey) all play here.

Life Cycle of a Sunflower

The seed for a sunflower grows roots. Then the roots grow a small stem. The stem grows bigger. The stem grows a flower. The flower grows seeds inside it.
